We really, really, REALLY wish there was a vaccine for the dreaded management affliction known as “Foot-in-Mouth Disease” that too many new bosses seem to fall victim to each year. It’s the condition where eager new managers say or do things in an effort to get to know or connect with their staffs, and then inadvertently cross the lines of privacy, discrimination, harassment or some combination of the three. Saying or doing the wrong thing, even with the intent of being a concerned and attentive leader, can set your company up for some expensive and damaging litigation.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has begun to circle the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and 2014 is still a year and a half away. Riding out the economic downturn has not been easy. People and businesses (even the many famous and successful ones) have cut back on their spending, learning to prioritize and make due with what they have until things looked up again. We’ve said it before, and we will say it again: Make sure you understand the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) before one of your employees uses it, or you could find yourself in a heap of trouble. The Department of Labor (DOL) does not take kindly to businesses that don’t comply.

Being a great boss is not about being everybody’s buddy or about being feared by your staff. It’s about being a leader who motivates and encourages loyalty and performance through your own actions. Great bosses realize that their employees are a critical part of what makes the company what it is. Employees who are satisfied and performing optimally because they are proud of their jobs give off great vibes about your business to customers and the community.
